Comments about the Manly Daily "Nurture" article on acupuncture for pregnancy (11 May 2010):
"East meets West for mothers"
Many Northern Beaches mothers and mothers-to-be at our Clinic have experienced the great benefits of acupuncture for fertility, pregnancy, labour, postpartum and childrens health.
I was very pleased to see that the Manly Daily printed an article in the "Nurture" section about the benefits of acupuncture in pregnancy. I would really love all pregnant women to know that natural, safe and effective help is available to support them and their baby throughout pregnancy and labour.
Acupuncture can be a very helpful and effective treatment for a wide range of conditions during pregnancy. In some cases, it will support the treatment given by a doctor or other health professional. In many cases, however, acupuncture alone is very effective in relieving the problem. You will probably also feel more relaxed and energetic after a course of acupuncture treatments.
Here are some conditions that are commonly treated with acupuncture during pregnancy:
- "Morning sickness" (nausea and vomiting)
- Heartburn
- Constipation
- Varicose veins, haemorrhoids, vulval varicosities
- Urinary tract infections
- Musculoskeletal conditions
(eg rib pain, symphysis pubis pain, upper back and neck pain, lower back pain and sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, leg cramps)
- Fatigue and exhaustion
- Anaemia
- Insomnia
- Anxiety and depression during pregnancy
- Vaginal discharge and itching
- Itching in pregnancy
(including PUPPP pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy, papular dermatitis of pregnancy, prurigo gestationis)
- Sinusitis
- Pregnancy-induced hypertension
- Oedema (swelling)
- Small-for-dates babies
(intrauterine growth retardation)
- Malposition and malpresentation
(eg posterior position, breech presentation) - Routine prebirth acupuncture to facilitate labour
- Induction of labour
- Miscarriage problems
(eg treating threatened miscarriage or supporting natural delivery of inevitable, missed or incomplete miscarriage)
